2007 Journal of Public Policy Marketing Thomas C. Kinnear Award recognizing papers that have made a significant contribution to the understanding of marketing and public policy issues within the past three years.

The paper "Heightening Adolescent Vigilance Toward Alcohol Advertising to Forestall Alcohol Use" was one of five nominated for the award. Bechtel-Wherry co-authored the paper with Marvin E. Goldberg, chair, Department of Marketing at Penn State's Smeal College of Business; Keith E. Niedermeier, visiting assistant professor of marketing, Wharton School of Business, University of Pennsylvania; and Gerald J. Gorn, chair, professor of marketing, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology.
