Finals Snacks - Penn State Altoona’s Alumni Society helps to relieve some of the tension for students taking finals. Alumni Society Board members serve pizza, potato chips and beverages to brain-drained students during a four-hour period in the lobbies of two of the campus’ classroom buildings. The group also doles out #2 pencils to students heading into classrooms to complete their exams.
Commencement Pins – Society Board members congratulate graduating students and welcome them to the Penn State Alumni Association. Graduates are also presented with “Penn State Alumni” lapel pins.
Spring 2009 Commencement will be held on Saturday, May 9.
Midwinter Dance – One of the organization’s primary fundraisers, members of the community are invited to the Bavarian Hall to enjoy appetizers, socialize with friends, and dance to the sounds of area bands. The 2009 Midwinter Dance is slated for Friday, February 13. Monies raised from this and other fundraisers support the Society’s student awards and giving to the campus.
Game-Watching Party – Penn State Altoona students gather with Alumni Society Board members to socialize and watch an “away” Penn State football game in the Slep
Student Center. The Alumni Society supplies munchies and drinks, and EVERYONE
brings their team spirit!
Adopt-A-Highway – Twice each year the Penn State Altoona Alumni Society cleans up the two-mile stretch of highway along Juniata Gap Road from Chestnut Avenue past the campus to Avalon Road. Additional volunteers are always welcome!
Blair County Arts Fest Creamery Ice Cream – Another of the Alumni Society Board’s main fundraisers, the Creamery Ice Cream sale is held at the Blair County Arts Fest each spring on campus. Board members dip, serve, and sell ice cream by the dish. The 2008 ice cream sale will be held Saturday and Sunday, May
16-17.
Ice Cream Social at Valley View Home – Residents and staff of nursing
homes in Altoona look forward to one Saturday each April when members of the Penn State Altoona Alumni Society roll through the doors bearing…more Penn State Creamery ice cream!
Freshman Move-In Water Station – Freshman Move-In 2005 was a first for this event. Society Board members (with help from Penn State Altoona’s Student Orientation Leaders) were on hand with bottled water, camaraderie, and comfort at the Rider Lot staging area, where incoming freshmen and their families waited to be called up to residence halls to unpack.
Summer Ice Cream Social - The Alumni Society Board recognizes the hard
work (vs. lounging by a pool!) put forth by summer session students at Penn
State Altoona with an ice cream social on an afternoon in July. You guessed
it...more Creamery ice cream.
