Development Council
Mission and Role Descriptions
The Development Council is made up in part of membership within the Penn State Altoona Advisory Board and accountable to this Board. Its mission is to assist the Chancellor of the college in fund-raising and friend-raising. During the period of July 1, 2003 through June 30, 2007, with due regard for the preferences of each donor and the needs of the college, the priorities will be Academic Excellence Initiatives (Undergraduate Research, Non Trustee Scholarship), Trustee Scholarships, Faculty Support, Sustaining Support, and Capital Projects.
- Responsibilities of the Council as a whole
- Formulate and/or approve overall strategy for fund-raising and oversee its implementation.
- Establish and/or approve operating policies.
- Assist in identifying and recruiting key volunteer leaders
- Assist in identifying, evaluating, cultivation and soliciting leadership and major donor prospects.
- Responsibilities of the individual Council Members
- Make a personal (and/or corporate, family foundation, etc) gift to the College.
- Serve as spokespersons for Penn State Altoona and its fund-raising program.
- Take a specific role to support the mission of the council such as:
- participate in the development and ongoing activities of external advisory boards of departments and centers
- help develop a stronger college presence in the key regions of the country (hosting small dinners or other gatherings)
- Take a leadership role in realizing the current priorities for the college
- Responsibilities of the Campaign Chairperson
- Make a significant gift to the Campaign, one that will inspire others.
- Serve as the chief volunteer spokesperson for the College’s goals, accomplishments, and objectives.
- Enlist other top volunteer leaders to serve on the College’s campaign committee.
- Spearhead and/or accompany the Chancellor and Director of Development in cultivation and solicitation visits with top-level prospects, including, as need, other Council members.
- Preside at Development Council meetings.
- Represent the College through attendance and participation at university level fund-raising meetings for volunteers.
- Provide inspiration and motivation for volunteer council members.
- Provide guidance and leadership to the members of the development staff.
- Responsibilities of Emeritus Council members
- Continue to provide financial support as appropriate.
- Attend meetings of the Development Council as desired.
- Provide advice and historical perspective.
- Serve as volunteer spokesperson for the college’s goals and accomplishments.
