Every so often when I am engaged in a conversation about my profession, a colleague, friend, or associate will ask with complete innocence whether my position as Director of Development and Alumni Relations at Penn State Altoona requires year-round employment. I assure them with complete certainty that I am indeed employed all twelve months of the year.
The end of the spring semester does not spell completion of tasks, projects, events, and programs associated with the strategic vision of my office. In many respects, summer is my team’s busiest season. This is the time of year when we reassess our goals and objectives, evaluate the viability of existing programs, establish new initiatives, and eagerly embrace preparations for our fall schedule of events.
Summer 2013 bears special significance because our University is now less than one year from the conclusion of our historic fundraising campaign For the Future: The Campaign for Penn State Students. As you are likely aware, this University-wide effort is directed toward a shared vision of Penn State as the most comprehensive, student-centered research university in America. The campaign’s top priority is keeping a Penn State degree affordable for students and families. The For the Future campaign is the most ambitious effort of its kind in Penn State’s history, with the goal of securing $2 billion by June 30, 2014. Penn State Altoona’s overall goal is $20 million.
I am proud to report that Penn State Altoona has far exceeded our goal of $4.5 million in scholarship support thanks to the generosity of our caring benefactors. As of this writing, we have raised nearly $6 million for scholarships that will enable recipients to focus full attention on their academics rather than the costs associated with that education.
One hundred percent of our volunteer Faculty/Staff Campaign Council (23 members) and one hundred percent of our Campaign Council (14 members) have made gifts, setting a wonderful philanthropic example. If you have yet to make a gift, I hope you will seize this opportunity to demonstrate your personal support for our students. If you have made a cash gift or a pledge, I express my gratitude to you.
On-line giving is quick, easy, and secure at https://secure.ddar.psu.edu/GiveTo/. All gifts remain at Penn State Altoona, helping our students realize their goals.
As members of the extended Penn State Altoona learning community, we all share a deep belief in the enduring value of a Penn State education. Respectfully, I ask you to partner with us on a campaign designed to ensure that the career and life goals of Penn State students are not only achieved, but exceeded. On behalf of all who pursue their academic goals and aspirations on our campus, I extend heartfelt thanks for your consideration.
N. Susan Woodring
