A New Year’s Greeting from the Director

On behalf of my team in Development and Alumni Relations, I express heartfelt best wishes to you for a healthy, happy, and memorable new year!

I possess great fondness for all holidays, but I must admit that I have been eagerly anticipating the arrival of 2014 for reasons of historical significance.

As a college, we will be celebrating the 75th anniversary of our founding. Plans are in place for the commemoration of this important milestone in various ways throughout the year. In future issues of IvyLink, I will share details of special events and activities, and present opportunities for you to recount your experiences as a student or alumnus.

With gratitude for the generosity of alumni and friends across the country, I am absolutely ecstatic over the prospects of Penn State Altoona not only achieving, but surpassing our $20 million goal in For the Future: The Campaign for Penn State Students. Our campaign goal is the second-largest of all Penn State campuses, excluding University Park. As For the Future nears its conclusion on June 30, 2014, gifts from individuals, couples, businesses, corporations, and foundations are enabling Penn State to fulfill its vision of advancing the frontiers of learning at the most comprehensive, student-centered research university in America. Thank you to all who support Penn State Altoona and our University through philanthropy.

Special events on the 2014 calendar include Winter Plunge festivities the weekend of January 24-26 and our spring Speaker Series event featuring Nate Berkus on Thursday, April 10. Our Penn State Altoona Alumni Society inaugurated Winter Plunge in 2013 as a fun way to raise funds in support of the Society’s scholarship program and Penn State Altoona Benefiting THON. Detailed information about Winter Plunge activities can be found at www.altoona.psu.edu/winterplunge.

We fully anticipate that a capacity crowd will welcome Nate Berkus to his speaking engagement at the Blair County Convention Center. Nate is a design expert, New York Times best-selling author and a former regular contributor to The Oprah Winfrey Show. During his appearance, Nate will be sharing professional advice with students and event patrons who are the lucky winners of dorm and home makeover contests. Again, more specific details will be available through IvyLink as the date of Nate’s visit nears.

And of course, the start of a new year marks a recommitment of my team to offer programming that meets the needs and interests of Penn State Altoona alumni and benefactors and the local communities in our college’s service area.

It’s going to be a fantastic year, and I look forward to regularly engaging you in some form or fashion throughout. Happy New Year!

Warm regards,

N. Susan Woodring
