My Fifth Year

A Column by Rebecca Harshbarger

I think it is safe to say that we are approaching that point in the semester when we are all surprised at how quickly it has arrived, but we all impatiently wait for warm weather to hit.

Our Development and Alumni Relations team is already planning events for the coming fall semester and all that it has to offer. Our office never stops; we are always on to the next big thing.

Recently, our office announced that Nate Berkus is not able to visit Penn State Altoona as part of our Speaker Series due to conflicts with his scheduling. As I’ve mentioned before, there is so much planning behind each event, but with planning comes surprises.

In Development, there are always triumphs, but like everything, there can be disappointments. The people I work with though have the ability to view any obstacle with a positive light. Although the news about Nate was unfortunate and caused some changes in plans, we move forward and look forward to future engagements.

One thing I am most looking forward to is playing a role in our campus’s campaign closing event in September, which was created to thank our donors for their contributions toward the campaign. The fall will also mark Penn State Altoona’s 75th anniversary. The coming year will certainly be marked with all kinds of exciting events. As always, I am looking for ways to engage our alumni in the festivities.

It’s hard to imagine that it will be a year in May since I graduated from Penn State Altoona. I remain grateful and excited to be part of a team that works so closely with many divisions and departments on our campus.
