A water temperature of 33.5 degrees could not deter approximately eight-five Penn State Altoona students, faculty, staff, alumni, and friends from taking a Winter Plunge into the waters of Canoe Creek State Park on January 27, 2013.

Organized by the college’s Alumni Society, the inaugural frosty fundraiser was all in good fun, with net proceeds benefitting the Society’s scholarship program and Penn State Altoona Benefitting THON. Sheetz, Inc. was the title sponsor of the event.

C. David Kimmel, associate director of alumni relations and stewardship, said net proceeds from pledges and sponsorships totaled over $12,000.

“To me, as a plunger, volunteer, and alum, the first-ever Winter Plunge could not have been any better,” said Thomas J. Koehle, president of the Alumni Society. “To see our students, staff, alumni, and community come out in full force to support two worthy causes truly shows what ‘We Are Penn State’ truly means.”

Keith Hacke, chair of Penn State Altoona Benefitting THON, said the Winter Plunge exceeded even his loftiest expectations.

“This being my first Winter Plunge, it was a huge thrill,” Hacke said. “I want to thank the Penn State Altoona Alumni Society for organizing this event and WTAJ, Sheetz, Inc., and all other sponsors for everything they did. THON is more than raising money for kids with pediatric cancer. THON raises awareness and provides support for the kids and families of the Four Diamonds Fund. Cancer doesn’t stop so why should we?”

R. Brent Baird, Penn State Altoona assistant athletic director and an alumnus of the college, said he is prepared to plunge again next year.

“At first I thought to myself, ‘what are you thinking,’ when I decided to do the plunge, but then I thought about the Four Diamonds Kids and all the students helped by scholarships and decided it would be fun to do,” said Baird. “This was a great event. I had a blast doing it with friends and co-workers. I really hope it just grows from here, and am happy that I can say I plunged the first year.”

Additional philanthropic support for the Winter Plunge may be mailed to Penn State Altoona Office of Development and Alumni Relations, Kazmaier Family Building, 1419 Twelfth Avenue, Altoona, PA, 16601. Please make checks payable to Penn State Altoona Alumni Society.
