"Hard work beats talent, when talent doesn't work hard enough," stated Tim Tebow, when describing his competitive spirit, drive, and determination. Tebow, NFL quarterback, Heisman Trophy winner, and philanthropist, spoke to a record crowd of more than 1,700 people on Tuesday, April 16, 2013, as part of the Penn State Altoona Speaker Series.
Tebow challenged the audience to ask themselves three questions, when choosing a path in life: do I love what I do; am I passionate about it; and am I willing to sacrifice. He explained that, "if you have these three qualities, you will be different from other people and you will be contagious. People will want to be around you." He told the audience that, "we need to put these three qualities into our faith, our families, and our community."
Regaling the audience with anecdotes from his collegiate and professional footbal careers, as well as providing lessons about humility, Tebow concluded by summing up how he hopes to be remembered: "At the end of the day, I want to have had a life of significance -- not a life of success -- and I believe you can have that by investing in others."
In 2010, Tebow founded The Tim Tebow Foundation, which is partnering with CURE International to build hospitals in the Philippines. In addition to Tebow CURE Hospitals, the foundation also grants wishes for children with life-threatening illnesses and constructs playrooms in hospitals and orphanages, among other far-reaching charitable works.
The title sponsor for this Speaker Series event was Operation Small Steps and Dr. Jack and Kari-Ann Rocco.
Proceeds from the Speaker Series benefit the Penn State Altoona Future Fund, which provides funding for programs that enrich academic and cultural life on campus and in the community. This fund also enables the administration to offer emergency scholarship assistance to students experiencing a financial crisis.
