Nate Berkus, design expert, author, and television host, will be at the Blair County Convention Center April 10, 2014, 7:30 p.m. as part of Penn State Altoona’s Speaker Series. He will also offer a free student forum in the Misciagna Family Center for Performing Arts from 4:30 - 5:15 p.m.
Clearly, Nate Berkus’s fascination with interiors began at an early age. “I was barely in grade school when I helped my mother rearrange the living room furniture for the first time,” he recalls. With his weekly allowance and his mother’s guidance, Berkus began pursuing his lifelong passion for creating beautiful design. “I think I was the only kid on the block who knew about furniture scale by the time I was eight."
After graduating from Lake Forest College, located thirty miles north of downtown Chicago, Berkus accepted a job with Leslie Hindman Auctioneers. It was from this position, as well as an internship with Dominique Aurientis in Paris, France, that he really developed a love and knowledge for the decorative arts and furniture. From his auction house experience came a deeper understanding of how to shop and what to buy.
Nearly all self-taught, Berkus formed Nate Berkus Associates in 1995 at the age of 24. Moving from the auction house to interiors was a natural evolution for him. The firm grew to include projects for Wolfgang Puck’s Spago, Barney’s New York, W hotels, as well as a prestigious list of private homes and clients. In 2002, Berkus was invited to make over a small space for The Oprah Winfrey Show. He became a featured design expert for the show and continued to garner national press in publications such as ELLE DECOR, US Weekly, People, O Magazine, Lucky, and Domino. In 2005, Berkus released his first book, Home Rules: Transform the Place You Live into a Place You’ll Love, a New York Times best seller. The following year, The Nate Berkus Show debuted on XM’s, Oprah Radio channel. In 2008, Berkus hit prime time as the host of the movement-making hit show, Oprah’s Big Give, and in 2010, The Nate Berkus Show launched in households across America. This daily series explores a broad range of lifestyle subjects providing take-away information and inspiration that makes a real difference in viewers’ daily lives. Relaxed, unpretentious, and accessible, Berkus brings his passion for design and life to an upbeat and entertaining hour filled with a vast array of topics, from stories of personal transformation and headline-making personalities to design tips and secrets, all explored through Berkus’s distinctive filter. He challenges himself and others to discover new things and be adventurous in day to day life.
