Goals and Objectives

Whatever your personal and career goals are, or turn out to be, the University, the College and the department have as our goal that you become a well-educated, informed, and competent professional and citizen. Below are the set of goals and objectives which we hope you will have attained by graduation:

HDFS Program Mission Statement
The Department of Human Development and Family studies is committed to preparing students to take their place in the human service and health services professions and in the community at large, as counselors, teachers, social workers, administrators, researchers, and citizens.

Program Objectives
In addition to the General Education skills, mandated by the University, HDFS graduates will:

  1. Demonstrate an understanding of the complexity of individual and family development across the life span in diverse contexts and changing environments.
  2. Demonstrate the ability to evaluate and apply research and theory to practice, and Policy.
  3. Be able to analyze processes, policies, and contextual factors that affect the delivery of human services to individuals and families.
  4. Demonstrate professional, ethical, and culturally sensitive standards of conduct.
  5. Demonstrate knowledge and competence in helping, leadership, and administrative skills for human services.

You will find these goals repeated in Appendix E. Each course that you take in the major is intended to help you meet these goals. Appendix F shows how the required courses for the major work to build the skills that lead to achievement of these goals. As you will see when you examine that matrix, what you have mastered in one course becomes the foundation for what you do in the next course. Thus, getting courses in the appropriate sequence matters.

Appendix B provides a template for sequencing courses for the 4-year degree. Appendix C provides a chart to help you visualize the sequencing of required courses for the major.
