Third Party Billing

The Health and Wellness Center offers health services, counseling and psychological services, and disability services to Penn State Altoona students. Beginning in October 2013, in partnership with Point and Click Solutions and Gateway, we will begin accepting and billing private health insurance for medical and psychiatric services. This billing helps alleviate some of the financial pressures faced by students and their parents. The Health and Wellness Center does not “balance bill” students or parents for the portion of insurance claims not paid by insurance with the exception of deductibles and non-covered services.

After the Health and Wellness Center files the insurance claim, the health insurance plan will send an Explanation of Benefits (EOB) to the student/parent insurance enrollee. Many students are concerned that their parents will find out sensitive information when the EOB is sent home. For the most part, EOBs simply state that a visit was charged or a test done. Diagnoses are not explicitly described on the EOB, though a code number may be listed. Students in special situations with sensitive information or other concerns about an EOB should speak with their providers. We are very concerned about and maintain our students’ confidentiality. The Health and Wellness Center will bill insurance companies for visits, procedures, medical supplies, collection of lab samples, lab tests done in-house but does not bill insurance companies for laboratory tests sent out to be performed or medications. Lab tests sent out will be billed to the patients insurance by the company performing the test. Medications can be paid for by cash, check or billed to the student’s bursar account. Some students may have medical conditions that require referrals to outside providers or specialists for consultation or treatment (including for radiology and x-ray). All expenses related to the medical services of referred providers are the responsibility of the student and their health insurance company.

IF A STUDENT DOES NOT PROVIDE ALL OF THE INFORMATION NECESSARY TO BILL HEALTH INSURANCE FOR SERVICES, THE CHARGES WILL BE AUTOMATICALLY TRANSFERRED TO THEIR BURSAR ACCOUNT.
