Trustee Scholarship Meets the Needs of Students

A gift annuity created by the late Dr. Arthur E. Pollock and his wife, Dorothy, has provided the funds for the establishment of the Dr. Arthur and Dorothy Pollock Trustee Scholarship at Penn State Altoona. The Pollocks had presented the $115,000 gift to the College in 1999, requesting that their endowment be used to provide financial assistance to undergraduate students who have a proven need for funds to meet their necessary college expenses. The couple cared deeply about helping students at risk of withdrawing from the University due to financial hardship.

"I would have never had the opportunity to attend medical school if it weren't for Penn State," Dr. Pollock stated at the time of the gift announcement. "I never asked Penn State for anything that I didn't receive. The College has always been very good to me, and I thought I would never be able to give back to Penn State all that it has given to me."

A 1936 Penn State graduate and World War II veteran, Dr. Pollock was a general practice physician in Altoona for nearly fifty years, until his retirement in 1990. He also was Medical Doctor for the Altoona School District, President of the Blair County Medical Society, and Chairman of the Pennsylvania Medical Society's Speaker's Bureau for 12 years. Dorothy Pollock had retired from Sylvania in 1980 with 38 years of service.

Dr. Pollock died this past October at age 89. Dorothy preceded him in death in 1999.
