Ivy Leaf - Spring 2006
Father Roy Bourgeois, Catholic priest, founder of the School of Americas Watch, political prisoner, Academy Award-nominated documentary film producer, and human rights activist spoke to the Penn State Altoona community in January.
Following military service as a naval officer, Fr. Roy entered the seminary and was ordained a Catholic priest. After working with the poor of Bolivia before being arrested and forced to leave the country, Fr. Roy became involved in issues surrounding U.S. policy in El Salvador. In 1990, he founded the School of Americas Watch, dedicated to informing the general public, Congress, and the media about the implications of the U.S. training of Latin American soldiers in combat skills.
