Ivy Leaf - Spring 2007
From the President
Alumni of Penn State around the world demonstrate pride in their alma mater in many ways. Some serve as volunteer leaders of affiliate groups like the Penn State Altoona Alumni Society, working hard to create opportunities for interaction and collaboration. Others sport apparel that identifies their affinity to the University. Philanthropy also is a wonderful vehicle for alumni to support the institution that provided us with an exceptional education and prepared us for success in our respective careers.
Of course, we experience Penn State pride long before we don the cap and gown. Thanks to the creation of the Blue & White Society by the Penn State Alumni Association, current students now can be part of an organization dedicated solely to fostering their lifelong affiliation with the University. The Blue & White Society is a dues-paying student organization that provides a valuable avenue for social interaction and networking. It offers benefits nearly identical to those received by members of the Association.
The goal is to organize a chapter at each Penn State campus. The first meeting of Penn State Altoona's chapter was held last fall. One of the fastest-growing student organizations on campus, our Blue & White Society already has a visible presence on campus. The organization has sponsored two coffeehouses featuring music and poetry readings, a Halftime Shootout during a men's basketball game, promotional activity between innings of a Penn State Altoona baseball game, and community service and social events. Through its sponsorship of these initiatives, the Blue & White Society has helped to keep the spirit level on campus high.
The Alumni Society and Blue & White Society hope to begin partnering on community service and specific campus events during the next academic year. It's a natural union with the potential to significantly enhance the undergraduate experience for students on campus. Our alumni are sure to benefit too, from participation in activities that undoubtedly will rekindle cherished memories of their own scholarly and extracurricular pursuits at Ivyside Park.
The spirited members of the Blue & White Society reflect positively on the entire Penn State student body. They fully embrace the uniqueness of the Penn State experience and want to share it with their peers. Without question, these are scholars in whom we can all take extra special pride.
