Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE)

In only its second year at Penn State Altoona, the Students In Free Enterprise (SIFE) team was recognized as Regional Champion and as one of the top sixty teams in the country.

There are 800 SIFE teams across the nation, which develop community outreach programs in five different areas, such as entrepreneurship and business ethics. The Penn State Altoona team was named champion during a regional competition in New York and went on to compete in the national round. At Nationals, the 160 finalist teams were divided into twenty different "leagues" to present their outreach projects to thirty judges. Penn State Altoona SIFE finished as second runner up in its league and in the top sixty overall. The team was presented with a trophy and a check for $750.

Cynthia Wood, SIFE advisor, says, "Everybody wins when it comes to SIFE. The team wins something, the students win because of the career fair, exposure to recruiters and scholarship opportunities, the college wins because it's developing partnerships, and the community wins because of the outreach. It's really amazing."

Fourteen students on the team had on-the-spot interviews with business recruiters attending the competition.
