Associate Professor of Spanish Yaw Agawu-Kakraba co-organized an international conference on Afro-Hispanic studies this past August at the University of Ghana in Africa. The first International Conference on Afro-Hispanic Studies across the Disciplines, the conference drew participants from Cuba, Chile, Brazil, the United Kingdom, Spain, and the United States. The main purpose of the conference was to open a dialogue among the various disciplines that are engaged in the study of issues related to Africa and the peoples of African ancestry in the Spanish-speaking world. A follow-up conference is scheduled to take place at the same venue in 2009.
