The PATH to Innovation

Penn State Altoona's Health and Wellness Center was one of only six institutions awarded a 2007 Innovation Grant out of eighty applicants across the country. The Program to Assess and Transform Health (PATH) received $6,118 in a first-ever grant awarded by the Jed Foundation. PATH formed in 2006 to address the holistic health and wellness needs of Penn State Altoona college students abusing alcohol and has grown to include those suffering from depression or at high risk for suicide.

The Jed Foundation is the nation's leading nonprofit organization working to prevent suicide and improve mental health among college students. The Innovation Grant was created to help fund campus programs such as training, social marketing, mental health education, parent outreach, and treatment as well as identify successful programs and share them with other parties interested in implementing similar efforts on their campuses. PATH coordinators plan to use the grant money to expand the program to Greek and other student organizations and to perform an evaluative report.
