Ivy Leaf - Winter 2008
In the wake of the Virginia Tech tragedy of 2007, colleges across the country are looking for ways to detect the warning signs of a troubled and potentially dangerous student. To this end, and in an increased effort to assist its students, Penn State Altoona has developed the Early Alert System, a program that allows employees to confidentially share a concern about a student’s academic progress, wellness, or safety. The program’s main purpose is to identify and intervene as early as possible with students who appear to be having academic or psychological difficulties.
Employees complete a Web-based form that will be reviewed by a program coordinator. Referrals then will be made to the appropriate academic or administrative department.
