Coaches vs. Cancer

With luminary sales, basketball gate attendance, and other donations, Penn State Altoona athletics and the men’s basketball program presented a check for more than $2,400 to the American Cancer Society at halftime of the Lions season-opener against Juniata College.

The game was part of the first-ever Coaches vs. Cancer event at Altoona that featured a number of ceremonies and presentations both before the contest and at intermission. The family of former Lion assistant basketball coach Jim Ellis, who died of cancer in July, was on hand and took part in the dedication of the Jim R. Ellis Leadership Award.

Nearly 600 luminaries were proudly displayed outside the Adler Gymnasium and around the Penn State Altoona campus in the hours prior to tip-off. Area high school coaches in attendance were recognized as the overflow crowd of more than 700 watched the Lions earn an 81-69 victory.
