The Pink Zone

The Penn State Altoona women’s basketball team hosted its first-ever Women’s Basketball Coaches Association Pink Zone game against Medaille College on February 14. The initiative helps raise awareness of breast cancer on the court, on campus, and throughout the community. Over 500 pink ribbons were on display inside the Adler Gymnasium and, thanks to ribbon sales, gate proceeds, and raffles, Penn State Altoona raised more than $2,600 that will be donated to the WBCA/Kay Yow Cancer Fund.

Nearly 300 people, many wearing pink t-shirts, jackets, or headbands, turned out for the Lions’ 90-72 victory over the Lady Mavericks. The women’s team wore pink uniforms that were auctioned off after the game, and a pink and white basketball used during a ceremonial tip-off also was raffled. Even the referees took part in the worthy cause by using pink whistles the entire game.
