In Remembrance: Louis E. Leopold

December 19, 1922 – January 6, 2009

Louis E. Leopold passed away on January 6, 2009 after an illness of more than two years. Leopold was a graduate of Altoona High School, class of 1940, and served as instructor in political science from 1969 until his retirement in 1985.

In the spring 2008 issue of Ivy Leaf, remembrances by alumni about their favorite professors were printed. The following is a remembrance from that article submitted about Leopold.

I have many good memories of my time at Penn State Altoona (1971-1973) and many positive experiences with a wide range of good professors.

That said, one individual stands out.

Political science instructor Lou Leopold was the single best professor I had in all my studies at Penn State Altoona, University Park, and Harrisburg campuses. It has been said that the best teachers help their students realize just how little they actually know and leave the classroom imbued with a life-long commitment to learning. Thirty-five years after leaving Lou’s classes at Penn State Altoona, the commitment to learn that he sparked continues to burn. In addition to helping his students become life-long learners, Lou’s most enduring legacy is how he approached the learning process. He never tried to teach us WHAT to think but focused all his efforts on teaching us HOW to think. He had a tremendously positive impact on my Penn State education and continues to have a tremendously positive impact on my life.
