Ivy Leaf - Spring 2010

A team of Penn State Altoona engineering students led by Eric Granlund, instructor in engineering, participated in the "Canstruction" fundraising project sponsored by the Blair/Bedford Builders Association at a recent home and garden show at the Jaffa Shrine in Altoona.

The project consisted of teams of architects, engineers, and students, competing to design and build giant structures made entirely out of canned foods. Penn State Altoona's entry was a model of Penn State's Beaver Stadium.

The structure, built by more than forty engineering students, contained 1,784 cans at a total weight of about 1,940 pounds. At the close of the exhibition, the canned food used in the structures was donated to local food banks for distribution to emergency feeding programs that included pantries, soup kitchens, and elderly and day care centers.
