Ivy Leaf - Fall 2010
Tread on Me
Summer 2010 saw Penn State Altoona upgrade two of its athletics facilities. Artificial turf was installed at Spring Run Stadium, the home field for the men's and women's soccer teams, to replace the former grass field. The Adler Gymnasium, where basketball and volleyball games are hosted, was improved with a brand new floor.
The new turf at Spring Run Stadium will allow more stability during soccer season, when rainy weather conditions previously forced some games to be postponed or rescheduled. Because of the artificial surface and a new draining system, the field will handle wet conditions much better than the previous natural grass surface.
The turf upgrade puts Spring Run Stadium among the elite on-campus facilities in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference. It also will benefit many activities beyond the varsity soccer teams, including campus intramurals, student life, and other approved events. It will help in the preservation of Stewart Athletic Field, a natural surface below the soccer field which is shared by the varsity baseball and softball teams and where intramural sports are frequently played. The men's and women's soccer teams christened the turf with home games on September 16.
In the Adler Gymnasium, a new floor was installed during the summer months to replace an aging surface. The new surface will keep the gym playable and up-to-date with NCAA regulations, as well as help in the prevention of injuries.
