The Impact of Victorian Postal Reforms

Laura Rotunno

Postal Plots in British Fiction, a new book by Laura Rotunno, associate professor of English, explores how Victorian postal reforms encouraged lower and middle classes to read and write, allowed them a social and political voice, and led many to literature. It also looks at Victorian literary professionals’ conflict between their support for liberal ideals in the literary marketplace and their fear that they would be unable to bring those changes to pass.
