Common Hour Poetry and Pizza featuring poet Cynthia Atkins set for Oct. 3
Poet Cynthia Atkins will read from her new book of poetry, In the Event of Full Disclosure, on Thursday, October 3, 2013 at 12:10 p.m. in the Edith Davis Eve Chapel.
Pizza will be served; attendees should bring their own beverages.
In the Event of Full Disclosure, published by CW Press in June, is Atkins' second collection of poetry. The book explores mental illness, family relationships, and the roles of women. Poet Seb Doubinsky says, "Cynthia Atkins' extraordinary collection is a display of precious, vacuum-packed, uranium-heavy poems that still glow in the dark a long time after you have finished reading them, illuminating your heart and guts from the inside."
Born and raised in Chicago, Atkins earned her B.F.A. and M.A. at the University of Illinois, and an M.F.A. from Columbia University's School of the Arts. Her previous collection, Psyche's Weathers, was published by CW Books in 2007. Her poems have appeared in such journals as American Letters & Commentary, Bloomsbury Review, BOMB, Caketrain, Chelsea, Denver Quarterly, The Florida Review, Good Foot, New York Quarterly, Seattle Review, Seneca Review, Sou'wester, and Verse. She is assistant professor of English at Virginia Western Community College.
Sponsored by the English Program and the Division of Arts and Humanities, the reading is free and open to the public.
