Penn State Altoona presents "A Midsummer Night’s Dream"
ALTOONA – The Division of Arts and Humanities’ fall production will be a performance of A Midsummer Night’s Dream and will take place November 14-17 in Penn State Altoona’s Paul R. and Margery Wolf Kuhn Theatre in the Misciagna Family Center for Performing Arts. Performances will be Thursday, Friday and Saturday at 7:30 pm with matinées Saturday and Sunday at 2:00 pm as well. Tickets are $5 for students and $7 regular admission. Students under 12 are free. Minors should be accompanied by an adult.
Shakespeare’s fantastical fusion of fairy tale folklore and ancient mythology is reinvigorated, returning to the simple fantasy of theatricality and the crude magic of traditional story telling. The classic story of the lovers and the fairies abandons period nostalgia and embraces the rich power of imagination in this fresh production.
With a musical score created and performed onstage by the acting company, the innocent magic of the enchanted forest is conjured with simple props and deeply imaginative choreography, underlining the coarser, darker elements of the classic comedy, and creating an engaging counterpoint to Shakespeare's absurd tale of love and lust.
A Midsummer Night's Dream by William Shakespeare is directed by 2013 Emerging Theatre Artist, Lee Kinney, and runs at the Misciagna Family Center for the Performing Arts. Kinney, a recent MFA graduate of Ohio University is an early –career theatre director based in New York with a primary interest in new work and play development. In addition to directing he also works as a freelance graphic artist (specializing in graphic design for theater) and as a composer and sound designer for theater.
Tickets and information regarding A Midsummer Night’s Dream are available at the Misciagna Family Center for Performing Arts 10 a.m. – 2 p.m., Monday - Thursday and before and during all performances.
