Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Reflection Luncheon to feature Carmen Gillespie
Penn State Altoona will hold its annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Reflection Luncheon Monday, January 19, 11:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. in the gymnasium of the Adler Athletic Complex.
Carmen Gillespie, professor of English and director of the Griot Institute of Africana Studies at Bucknell University, will be keynote speaker for the event. Gillespie also serves as the Bucknell University Arts Coordinator. Her research, writing, and teaching interests are in American, African American, and Caribbean literatures and cultures and creative writing.
As an author, Gillespie was one of three finalists for the prestigious Lotus Prize in 2009 and has written critical reference books about African-American authors Toni Morrison and Alice Walker. Her live performances and spoken-word presentations include themes that reverberate from the displacement of Africans from their ancestral home, as well as the migration of African-Americans from the southern to the northern United States.
The luncheon is sponsored by Penn State Altoona's Office of Institutional Equity, Diversity, and International Student Services. For more information, contact Matt Stumpf at email@example.com.
