Shirley Valentine by Willy Russell - starring Caitlin Osborne
7:30 pm | Misciagna Center Wolf Kuhn Theatre
Penn State Altoona to present "Shirley Valentine"
ALTOONA – Penn State Altoona will present Shirley Valentine, by Willy Russell, February 5 and 6 at 7:30 p.m. in the Wolf Kuhn Theatre of the Misciagna Family Center for Performing Arts. Tickets are $5 for Penn State Altoona students and $7 for general admission.
This one-woman show, originally produced by Next Stage Theatre, tells the story of a frustrated suburban housewife who dreams of living for just one day without knowing “exactly what will happen.” Caitlin Osborne, Penn State Altoona instructor in dance and theatre arts, will star as Shirley.
Says Osborne, “Shirley is the character that every actor wants to play and every audience wants to befriend. She is funny and feisty, charming and vulnerable. She dreams big, and you can’t help cheering her on as she contemplates taking a leap into the unknown. I feel incredibly fortunate to be able to bring this show back for audiences in Altoona and at my Penn State campus.”
Director John Hruschka brings a unique vision to the production, creating an intimate setting on the Misciagna stage. Audiences will experience a “black box” environment, sitting on the stage within a few feet of Osborne. In its premiere run, Shirley Valentine won numerous awards, including the Lawrence Olivier award for Best New Comedy (1986) and the Theatre World Award for Outstanding Broadway debut (1989). It was nominated for several Tony Awards and was adapted into an award-winning film of the same name.
Seating is limited. Tickets may be purchased at the box office, Monday – Friday, 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. and before and during all performances. This performance is for general adult audiences. For further information, call the Misciagna Family Center for Performing Arts at 814-949-5452.
