Faculty Lecture Series: Environmental Issues Tied in with the New Deal

12:15 - 1:00 pm | Hawthorn Building 150

Presented by Dr. Brian Black, head of the Division of Arts and Humanities and professor of history and environmental studies.

At the intersection of modernism and new labor-saving technology, the 1939 World’s Fair introduced Americans to a new model of living. With abundant, inexpensive energy as its foundation, the “American Way of Life” took shape that would define the “greatest generation” and also serve as a primary “front” in the Cold War of ideology that separated the U.S. from the Soviet Union. Unfolding from this single moment of convergence, “the American Century” became a global symbol of consumer power—from TV dinners to suburban sprawl, muscle cars to station wagons, and Tupperware to Hula Hoops. The lifeblood of this consumer nation, inexpensive petroleum set the pattern for decades of American consumption.
