SNAPSHOTS: Ian Marshall receives Kjell Meling Award
Ian Marshall, professor of English and American studies at Penn State Altoona, received spring the Kjell Meling Award for Distinction in the Arts and Humanities.
On April 16, Marshall accepted the 2009 Kjell Meling Award. Marshall was presented with his award and delivered a lecture, which was followed by a book signing and reception.
Marshall came to Penn State Altoona in 1988 as an assistant professor after receiving his doctorate in English from the University of Delaware. He became a full professor in 2000. He is regarded as an influential founder of Penn State Altoona’s Environmental Studies Program, one of the college’s signature programs. Marshall has earned many awards and honors during his career with Penn State, including the Grace D. Long Faculty Excellence Award and the Penn State Teaching Fellow Award, both in 1999. He has built an international reputation for his work in American literary studies, particularly in terms of his significant scholarship devoted to ecocriticism and our understanding of the natural world. He is the author of four books -- "Storyline: Exploring the Literature of the Appalachian Trail," "Peak Experiences: walking mediations on literature, nature, and need," "Coming into Contact: Essays in Ecocritical Theory and Practice," and "Walden by Haiku," published just this year.
Penn State Altoona initiated the Meling Award in 2006 to honor the memory of its longtime associate dean for Academic Affairs, who passed away in 2005. The award is intended to memorialize Meling's love of literature and language and his unwavering support as an administrator for the development of Penn State Altoona's faculty as scholars and artists.
