Penn State Altoona hosts events for Sexual Assault Awareness month

April is Sexual Assault Awareness month and Penn State Altoona is hosting several events surrounding it.

On March 27, the Health & Wellness Center will hold its annual Sex on Campus from 3 – 7 p.m. in the Adler Athletic Complex. This event, open to Penn State Altoona students only, will allow them to gather information and participate in interactive education on abstinence, sexually transmitted infections, sexual assault, sexual decision-making, and contraceptive methods. Adagio Health will also present the Safe Sex Olympics.

On April 3, the International MaleSurvivor Organization will present the critically acclaimed film Boys & Men Healing at 7 p.m. in the Misciagna Family Center. The documentary focuses on the impact of male child sexual abuse on the individual and society. A panel discussion will be held afterward with the co-producer of the film, a psychologist, a clinical social worker, the vice president of International MaleSurvivor, and a male survivor featured in the documentary. Mental health workers and psychologists, social workers, and school and community counselors are also encouraged to attend.

The Clothesline Project will be displayed in the Slep Student Center all day on April 4. Students are invited to share stories of survival related to the sexual abuse/assault on t-shirts. Those shirts will be hung in the Center for the community to view. From 4-8 p.m. that evening, in a partnership with Family Services Incorporated, a Take Back the Night rally will be held in the Laurel Pavilion and in the Slep Center. Help break the silence of sexual and domestic abuse by joining in the rally. The event includes a candle light vigil and keynote speaker.
