Penn State Altoona is offering ten AmeriCorps Education Awards to students through the Scholars in Service to Pennsylvania program for the 2012-2013 academic year. The awards, which range from $1,000 to $1,500, will enable ten Penn State Altoona students to work on faculty-guided projects that address community needs, while earning money to pay for college costs or to repay student loans.

Current project areas include: children’s and youth Initiatives; African-American heritage; veterans services assessment; social services mapping and analysis; poverty and community development; and sustainability, environmental stewardship, and heritage.

Students in all Penn State Altoona degree programs are encouraged to apply. The deadline to apply is May 7, 2012. For more information, contact Tom Shaffer at TLS24@psu.edu or 814-949-5789.

Scholars in Service to Pennsylvania is administered by the Philadelphia Higher Education Network for Neighborhood Development and is monitored by PennSERVE: the Governor’s Office of Citizen Service. AmeriCorps is a program of the Corporation for National and Community Service.
