Joy Himmel, director of Penn State Altoona's Health and Wellness Center, recently spoke at two national conferences; Association for University and College Counceling Center Directors national meeting, in Newport, Rhode Island, and the Ohio Program for Campus Safety and Mental Health in Columbus, Ohio. Both presentations focused on Himmel's recent research data with the parent population in college health. The research study looked at the attitudes and perceptions of parents of students in higher education related to mental health and suicide prevention issues. The presentations focused on strategies to engage parents as gatekeepers in identifying students at risk.
