With the encouragement of Sheetz Fellows program founder Stephen G. Sheetz to measure future success based on personal standards, beliefs, and desires, six Penn State Altoona students celebrated their formal induction into the program of advanced instruction and activities that promote an enhanced awareness and understanding of business theory and practice.

The second class of Sheetz Fellows was inducted during a special ceremony in the Sheetz Center for Entrepreneurial Excellence on February 16, 2013. All six inductees share an academic focus on management and marketing. Five of the six are also pursuing a course of study in entrepreneurship.

“Just as you must blaze your own trail to professional achievement based on personal goals, ambitions and dreams, in the final analysis, you are the only individual who has the right to judge the degree to which you have achieved success,” Steve Sheetz, a 1969 Penn State graduate and former Penn State Altoona student, told the induction class. “Some day, when contemplating your impact as a professional, as an engaged citizen, as an involved parent, or as a community volunteer—perhaps all of these—you will be most true to yourself if you measure your success by your own standards.”

The Sheetz Fellows program was established as part of the historic $3 million gift presented to Penn State Altoona by the couple in 2009. Sheetz Fellows aspire to levels of achievement, values, and integrity associated with the Sheetz name and Penn State’s reputation.

Established academic standards must be met to maintain status within the program. Other requirements include completion of a study abroad experience, credit-bearing internship, ethics course, one-year community service commitment, and self-sponsored research or creative project. The mentoring component of the Sheetz Fellows program pairs seniors with selected professionals who will offer guidance and insights divined throughout their careers as successful business executives and entrepreneurs.

The rigorous and stimulating experiences of the Sheetz Fellows program are designed to provide students with the knowledge and skill sets necessary to achieve their academic goals and professional aspirations. All students graduating with the status as a Sheetz Fellow will receive special recognition at commencement.

“I express sincere gratitude to Steve and Nancy for continuously demonstrating their support for our students and the interests of our college through word and deed,” said Chancellor Lori J. Bechtel-Wherry. “I congratulate each of our Sheetz Fellows for pursuing this extraordinary opportunity and express best wishes for continued academic success.”
