Todd Davis and Erin Murphy to present poetry reading

Two English program faculty members will read from their new books of poetry on Thursday, September 12, 2013 at 4:00 p.m. in rooms 101-103 of the Misciagna Family Center for Performing Arts. Todd Davis, professor of English and environmental studies, will read from In the Kingdom of the Ditch, published in June by Michigan State University Press. Erin Murphy, associate professor of English, will read from Distant Glitter, published in June by Word Poetry.

In the Kingdom of the Ditch is Davis’ fourth poetry collection. Reviewer Tom Montgomery Fate observes that the book was written “in the shadow of [Davis’] own father's death from cancer, so readers can feel the darkness of loss. Yet Davis also writes from the soft light of his two sons' adolescence, as they grow into adulthood…As readers encounter the ordinary miracles that Davis reveals as both father and son…they also are reminded that the human is not apart from nature but a part of it. In these poems death is not only separation, or 'the end,' but also marks the human species' inherent relatedness to the whole of creation.”

Distant Glitter is Murphy’s fifth poetry book. Poet James Harms says that Murphy’s “ingenuity is grounded in trust—she believes language can lead us to insight. Time and again she brings us face to face with ordinary devastation, the daily tragedies and losses that accumulate in every life. And without fail she rescues her readers from the recognition of emptiness, from Stevens' 'the nothing that is,' by offering up the thrilling and redemptive rewards of the imagination.”

Sponsored by the English program and the Division of Arts and Humanities, the reading is free and open to the public. Davis and Murphy will sign copies of the books which will be available for purchase.
