College Plans Events for Disability Awareness Week, Oct. 28 - Nov. 1

Penn State Altoona will offer a series of events in recognition and celebration of Disability Awareness Month in October. Penn State Altoona’s 2013 Disability Awareness Week will take place October 28 through November 1 and will include the following events:
Monday, October 28 – Disability Awareness Information Fair – 4 - 7 p.m., Pond View Lounge, Slep Student Center
Students from various degree programs will be presenting informational displays highlighting a variety of disability-related topics including stigma, sources of prejudice and discrimination, disability language guidelines, the American's with Disabilities Act, universal design, adaptive equipment for recreation participation, and more. All students, faculty, and staff are welcome and encouraged to attend.
Tuesday, October 29 – Rohan Murphy, Guest Speaker – 7 p.m., Slep Student Center
Rohan Murphy, Penn State alum and wrestler with a disability, will present a motivational speech to Penn State Altoona students. This event is sponsored by the Student Multicultural Advisory and Recruitment Team (SMART). For more information, visit www.rohanmurphy.com online.
Wednesday, October 30 – Film: Sun Kissed – 7 p.m., Fireside Lounge, Slep Student Center
Sun Kissed is a documentary exploring a genetic disorder, common on the Navajo Reservation, that makes exposure to sunlight fatal. Watch as a family impacted by the condition "confronts cultural taboos, tribal history and their own unconventional choices to learn the shocking truth" about the possible origin of this condition. Thursday, October 31 – Students Advocating for Disability Awareness (SADA) Flash Mob at the Safe Trick or Treat – 7 p.m., Intramural Fields

Friday, November 1 – Faculty and Staff Disability Discussion Panel – 8 - 9:30 a.m., Creekside Room, Port Sky Cafe
Penn State Altoona will hold its final event commemorating Disability Awareness Week, a discussion panel made up of Penn State Altoona faculty and staff highlighting disability-related concerns on campus. The panel will discuss pertinent information for faculty and staff regarding accessibility, reasonable accommodations, classroom management issues, academic standards, disability services, and other disability-related topics. In addition, faculty and staff members are encouraged to utilize this opportunity as an open forum to ask questions and address concerns relative to meeting the unique needs of students with disabilities. Panel members include Joy Himmel, Cherrie Henry, Rick Wareham, Barbara Hong, Shelly Beaver, and Bill Ritzman. A light breakfast will be served. This event is sponsored by Disability Services and Human Resources and has been organized by SADA.
Penn State Altoona's Disability Awareness Week is organized by Students Advocating for Disability Awareness, in conjunction with the Student Multicultural Advisory and Recruitment Team, the Office of Institutional Equity, Diversity, and International Student Services, the Office of Disability Services, and the Office of Human Resources.
