Childcare center receives accreditation

Friday, January 17, 2014 - 395 hits

The Penn State Altoona Child Development Center recently received accreditation through the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC). This title represents the mark of quality in early childhood education.

Center leaders started the self-study process for NAEYC accreditation in 2011 by examining its communication with parents, curriculum, effective teaching approaches, ongoing assessment, nutrition and health of the children, and physical environment. Surveys were sent to parents and staff to gain insights into the program’s strengths and needs. After an on-site visit from a NAEYC assessor in December, the Center achieved accreditation, one of just two preschools/child care centers have this designation.

The Penn State Altoona Child Development Center is a satellite program of Penn Mont Academy in Hollidaysburg, PA. The Center provides care for the children of Penn State Altoona faculty, staff, and students and is also open to children from the surrounding community. The curriculum is based on the work of Maria Montessori. The Center is also accredited by the American Montessori Society and Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools.

NAEYC Accreditation began in 1985 with the goal of providing an accrediting system that would raise the level of early childhood programs.
