Murphy to present reading and book launch Feb. 25

A poetry reading and book launch featuring Erin Murphy, associate professor of English, will be held Tuesday, Feb. 25 at 7:00 p.m. in the Titelman Study of the Misciagna Family Center for Performing Arts.

Murphy will read from her sixth book of poetry, Ancilla, which was published in January by Lamar University Press. The poems in Ancilla are voiced by little-known historical figures who played ancillary roles in the lives of famous writers, artists, musicians, scientists, and philosophers, including Walt Whitman, Friedrich Nietzsche, Georgia O’Keefe, and Gustav Mahler.

A book review published in the Cider Press Review observes that “[t]he poems in this collection are typical of Murphy’s style, lean and clean, snappy and jazzy ... Each is a little gem, cut and polished, all the dross filed away ... But beyond craft, these poems remind us to look harder at the ancillae, those figures both in history and in everyday life, who are easy to overlook, but whose contributions should never be ignored.”

Murphy will be followed immediately by Hard Freight Café, an open mic event presented by the campus literary magazine. Sponsored by the English program and the Division of Arts & Humanities, both events are free and open to the public.
