ALTOONA – Penn State Altoona is pleased to present Missing: Mom, an exhibition of work by Visual Arts Studies senior Hannah Sheridan. The exhibition will be on display in the Sheetz Gallery of the Misciagna Family Center for Performing Arts from April 24 – May 4, 2014. A reception will be held from 3 - 5 p.m., April 24 in the Titelman Study of the Misciagna Center.

Missing: Mom focuses on the artist’s loss of her mother and her family’s ability to remember the past while moving forward. The first body of work, Lost & Found, includes portraits of surrogate mothers who have helped Sheridan out since her mom’s death in 1998. Left Behind, the second body of work, presents photographs of her mom’s heirlooms and a depiction of life without her mom. The third body of work, Legacy, includes animations the artist rendered to reveal memories and family moments that include her mom’s spirit even after her death.

Of the work, Sheridan says, “Since my mom passed away fifteen years ago, I have always struggled with how best to keep her spirit with me. The focus is on the relationships, memories, and genetics she imparted on loved ones. I feel these pieces convey the strength of my mom’s continued presence in my family’s life.”

Sheridan is from Cresson, Pennsylvania, and has studied multiple art disciplines in Philadelphia and Pittsburgh. She recently placed second in Penn State Altoona’s juried art exhibition, Tell Me What You See: Images Inspired by The Beatles, and will also display additional work in a student exhibition in the McLanahan Gallery at Penn State Altoona.
