Thursday, March 20, 2014 - 344 hits

Penn State Altoona softball's freshman hurler Kate Burge (Philipsburg, PA/Philipsburg-Osceola) picked up another recognition of her standout performance last week when she was named the Eastern College Athletic Conference's Division III South Region Pitcher of the Week on Tuesday night.

Burge's collegiate softball career has gotten off to a spectacular start. In just her second pitching start last Tuesday, she tossed a perfect game against Bay Path College, the fourth in program history. Burge threw seven spotless innings while striking out 14 batters to tie a school single game record for strikeouts. She followed that by throwing another complete game victory against Keystone College on Thursday, allowing just one run in seven innings and recording eight strikeouts. Against Gettysburg College on Friday, Burge contributed two scoreless innings of relief.

For the week, Burge pitched 16 innings and went 2-0, allowing just five hits, one run, and no walks while striking out 23. In the AMCC, Burge is currently ranked first in earned run average (0.63), tied for second in strikeouts (28), tied for third in wins (2), and first in saves (1).

Penn State Altoona softball is 8-2 this season.
