RTE program to present Joseph A. Smak on Apr. 22

Penn State Altoona’s Rail Transportation Engineering program will present Joseph A. Smak on Tuesday, April 22, 2014 at noon in room 108 of the Sheetz Family Health Center. Smak, a Penn State alum and president of the American Railway Engineering and Maintenance-of-Way Association (AREMA), will offer a presentation titled “AREMA and the Railroad Engineering Student: Your Future Industry.” Pizza will be provided.
Joseph A. Smak has thirty-four years of experience in railroad engineering. He graduated from Penn State with a Bachelor of Science degree in civil engineering. After graduation, Smak held positions at Conrail and CSX Transportation. He is currently the Senior Director of Track Maintenance and Compliance at Amtrak, where he also was the Director of Track Standards and Specifications for Amtrak in Philadelphia, PA.
Smak is currently the President and Chairman of the Board of Governors of AREMA. He also serves on the North American Track Standards group, and is a member of the American Association of Non-Destructive Testing. Joe was a member of the FRA Rail Integrity Task Force, and currently serves on the FRA Rail Fatigue Working Group as well as the FRA Rail Safety Advisory Committee.
