On goals and aspirations as SGA president:
I love Altoona, and I love Penn State. I grew up spending time at Penn State Altoona, and I wanted to come here to study. I also knew that I wanted to be the president of SGA. I love politics, and I know I can make even better things happen at this campus as president.
Last semester I was the freshman class president, which means I was a voting member of senate. To get on the ballot for president, I had to get 250 signatures from students around campus. Because it’s so personal here, the students I got those signatures from still remember me, and I remember them. They can look to me now and recognize me as someone to help lead the college. The only reason SGA exists is for the students. We are their voice, and we are here for them.
One of the issues brought to our attention by the students is advising reform, so SGA plans to tackle that next year. We also want to look into having some sort of food and beverage offered in and around the library during finals for students as they study. I’m also really pushing for more growth downtown, and I’m excited about increasing our student population and the number of majors we offer here. I want Altoona to have its own identity. I want students to feel connected to Penn State as a whole but that Altoona is their home.
I plan to work closely with other organizations on campus to recruit more members to join SGA. Plus, having representatives from different clubs and groups will help us have a bigger say about what goes on here. I think it will help us get more done.
We also want to uphold the image of Penn State Altoona and its amazing students. I want the great things our students do to be known throughout the community, not just the negative issues and occurrences that are so often reported in the media. The majority of our students do so many great things here, and I want that to be seen.
I’m so excited and the next academic year is going to be one of the most amazing years this campus has ever seen. It’s going to be because of the people around me, and all of the hard work that SGA is going to put in to serving Penn State Altoona.
