Altoona Physics Department
Undergraduate Research Opportunities The faculty
of Penn State Altoona's Physics Department offer a number of research
opportunities for Altoona's undergraduate students.
(Updated March 2008) |
Nuclear Physics Dr. Gary Weisel is looking for students to assist him in the
analysis of neutron-deuteron data at three neutron energies: 19.0, 21.0, and
22.5 MeV. The student should have some knowledge of the Linux/Unix
operating system and be interested in working with computers and the
visualization of statistical data with graphical interfaces. This data for
this project was taken at the Triangle Universities Nuclear Laboratory
at Duke University. Contact Gary Weisel at gxw20 if you are interested in helping with this work! |

Pictured to the left, is Penn State engineering major Bradley D. Buck presenting his work on the
analysis of neutron-deuteron analyzing power data at the Penn State Altoona
Undergraduate Research Fair on April 5, 2005. Buck's poster represented
the completion of
three semesters of work in collaboration with Gary Weisel. |
Solid State Physics Dr. Darin Zimmerman and the Altoona Microwave group is looking for students to
assist with work on the heating and characterization of powdered metal
composites. The heating project resulted in an article published in the
Journal of Applied Physics. The Microwave Group has started a new
project characterizing the variation of the electrical properties of powdered
metal composites as the ratio of metal/insulator is varied. Particularly
important is so-called "percolation," the critical metal/insulator ratio at
which electrical properties change suddenly. Contact Darin Zimmerman at
dtz1 if you are interested in helping with this work! |

Penn State students Kelley Martin and Chuck Smith operating the microwave
heating apparatus in the Zimmerman lab at Altoona. Both Kelley and Chuck
are co-authors on the Microwave Group's recent paper in the Journal of
Applied Physics. |
