Opinions about Installation of Wireless Technology
A Survey of Those Teaching in 202 Holt
The Strategic Planning Committee for Information Technology is currently considering a proposal to implement wireless computing in Holtzinger 202 in the spring of 2005. According to the Registrar's Office, you are either currently teaching in this room or are scheduled to do so during the spring. Since there are trade-offs associated with this technology, the committee is interested in your opinions about the desirability of this technology in this classroom.

Briefly, the arguments in favor of the use of wireless technology have focused upon its convenience—students could have access to the web and their e-mail accounts without plugging a laptop computer into the wall.

The arguments against wireless technology have emphasized the slower speed of the connection, classroom decorum, and academic integrity. Currently available technology provides a 100mb hardwire connection to the internet, e-mail, and print server. Using wireless, the speed of that connection is reduced to between 11mb and 54mb, depending upon the individual computer's wireless card. These latter values may be further reduced when multiple users (a typical classroom application) attempt to make use of the technology at the same time. Those making heavy use of graphics will be particularly aware of the degraded speeds.

Concern about classroom decorum and/or academic integrity as focused upon student use of wireless technology (including their own) during classroom lectures (e.g., surfing the web while you are lecturing) and accessing the web during examination periods.

In light of the above information and your own thoughts about the use of technology in our classrooms, do you support the conversion of Holtzinger 202 to a wireless classroom?
