Lions Grind Out 7-4 Win Versus Juniata in Game One
ALTOONA, Pa. - Strong relief pitching and a workmanlike performance at the plate helped Penn State Altoona pull past Juniata College 7-4 in the first game of Tuesday afternoon's doubleheader at Stewart Athletic Field.
Down 1-0 in the bottom of the first inning, Jordan Swope (State College, PA/State College/Tussey Mountain) singled to right to tie the game. One batter later, Levi Rentzel (York, PA/Central York) made it 2-1 on his sacrifice fly.
But Chase Dykstra's two-run home run to left field in the top of the second put Juniata on top 3-2.
Jimmy Baum (Shermans Dale, PA/West Perry) evened the score at 3-3 in the bottom half of the inning with his RBI single to left.
But the Eagles answered with Russell Gray's RBI single in the fourth that gave them a 4-3 lead.
In the fifth, Penn State Altoona was able to tie the game 4-4 on Rentzel's RBI single through the left side.
The Lions tacked on three insurance runs in the sixth, thanks to Swope's RBI single, Tim Norris (Greensburg, PA/Hempfield) scoring on a wild pitch, and Cord Heine's (Malvern, PA/Mercersburg Academy) sac fly.
Penn State Altoona's bullpen shut Juniata's offense down after the first three innings, as Chris Keeler (Oxford, PA/Oxford), Josh Clark (Millersburg, PA/Millersburg), and Matt Gehret (Altoona, PA/Altoona) combined to pitch four scoreless innings and allow just two hits and three walks.
Clark picked up the win, his first of the year, while Gehret earned his second save.
