La Roche Takes Game One From Lions 6-4
ALTOONA, Pa. - A five-run third inning propelled La Roche College to a 6-4 win over Penn State Altoona baseball on Tuesday in a doubleheader of Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference teams at Stewart Athletic Field.
The Lions scored three runs in the bottom of the second to take the initial lead. Austin Smith (Richeyville, PA/Bethlehem-Center) drew a walk and came around to score on an error to put his team on the scoreboard. Later in the inning, Jordan Swope's (State College, PA/State College/Tussey Mountain) double to left field plated two.
But La Roche responded with five runs in the top of the third inning. Matt Sabitini led off the inning with a walk and later scored on a passed ball. Later, Casey Zimmerman notched the go-ahead hit with a bases-clearing double to left. Dan Burns added an RBI single to center, making it 5-3.
Penn State Altoona came within one run in the sixth when Jimmy Baum (Shermans Dale, PA/West Perry) reached base on a catcher's inferference call, allowing Smith to score from third. But the Lions squandered a golden opportunity to take the lead, leaving the bases loaded to end the inning.
The Redhawks added an insurance run in the seventh on Brian Herb's RBI single to left.
