Lady Lions Swept in Doubleheader at Nittany Lion Park

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. - Penn State Altoona softball lost both games of a doubleheader against non-conference opponent Case Western Reserve University on Wednesday afternoon at Beard Field at Nittany Lion Softball Park. The Spartans won game one 13-4, then took game two 11-5.

In game one, Brittany Smith (Bellefonte, PA/Bellefonte) led the Lady Lions at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a double and a run scored.

Case Western jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning, helped by a pair of Penn State Altoona errors.

The Spartans doubled their lead in the fourth. Molly O'Brien's RBI triple to deep center precended Makenzie Lein's run-scoring double to left-center. Gena Roberts' RBI double made it 6-0.

The Lady Lions got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fourth by showcasing some power. Kahla Lutz (York, PA/West York) and Brooke Morningstar (Lewistown, PA/Lewistown) hit back-to-back solo home runs to left field, cutting Case Western's lead to 6-2.

Penn State Altoona narrowed their deficit to 6-4 in the fifth in Lily Glunt's (Snow Shoe, PA/Bald Eagle) two-run double to center.

But the Spartans scored three in the sixth and four in the seventh, taking a victory in game one.

In game two, the Lady Lions found themselves in an early hole again when Case Western scored five runs in the top of the first.

With one swing of the bat, Kelly Chambers (Snow Shoe, PA/Bald Eagle) made it 5-2 in the bottom of the first when she hit a two-run homer to straightaway center.

Chambers was the top hitter for either team in the second game of the day, going 4-for-4 with a season-high five RBIs.

After three scoreless innings, the Spartans reeled off six runs in the fifth inning to go up 11-2.

But Chambers went yard for the second time in the game during the bottom half of the inning, blasting a three-run shot to center field that made it 11-5.

However, the Lady Lions could not make up any more ground on Case Western's lead, losing the second game of the doubleheader.
