Lady Lions Grind Out 2-1 Win on Opening Day of AMCC Tournament
ERIE, Pa. - #2 seed Penn State Altoona softball pulled out a tough 2-1 win over #3 D'Youville College on Friday afternoon at Behrend Field on the first day of the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Softball Tournament.
The Lady Lions routinely posted big scores throughout the regular season, but the team leaned on its strong pitching to help secure a win during Friday's low-scoring affair.
Jackie Smith (Hollidaysburg, PA/Hollidaysburg) pitched a complete game to earn her team-best 14th win of the season. In seven innings, she allowed just one unearned run on three hits and four walks.
After four innings, the game was knotted in a scoreless tie. But Penn State Altoona's bats finally got to D'Youville starting pitcher Hannah Norton in the bottom of the fifth inning.
Ala Miller (Muncy, PA/Muncy) led off the inning with a single down the left field line. One batter later, Brittany Smith (Bellefonte, PA/Bellefonte) sent a double into left-center to score Miller and plate the game's first run.
Smith scored on Kahla Lutz's (York, PA/West York) RBI single to center, making it 2-0.
D'Youville narrowed the score to 2-1 in the top of the sixth when Abby Campbell scored on an error with two outs.
In the seventh, the Lady Spartans advanced the potential game-tying run into scoring position with two outs, but Jackie Smith got a strikeout to end the game.
Penn State Altoona will continue play in the AMCC Tournament tomorrow, Saturday, May 5 against top-seeded Penn State Behrend. Approximate start time for the game is 3:00 PM.
