Lady Lions Suffer Heartbreaking 5-4 Extra Innings Loss in AMCC Championship Game
ERIE, Pa. - Ashley Gruber's home run in the bottom of the ninth inning handed Penn State Altoona softball a heartbreaking 5-4 extra innings loss to Penn State Behrend in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Championship on Sunday at Behrend Field.
Behrend broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the third inning on Amy Greene's sacrifice fly and Samantha Grismore's RBI single.
Penn State Altoona tied the game 2-2 in the top of the fifth. Lauren Bove (Mechanicsburg, PA/Cumberland Valley) led off the inning with a triple and scored on Jackie Smith's (Hollidaysburg, PA/Hollidaysburg) RBI single to center. Later in the inning, Smith scored on Kelly Chambers' (Snow Shoe, PA/Bald Eagle) groundout.
The home team answered back in the bottom of the fifth when Chelsi Riordan plated two runs with her single to right, making it 4-2.
The Lady Lions rallied in the seventh to tie the game again. Christina Stathes (Bellefonte, PA/Bellefonte) came up with a big two-out, two-run single to make it 4-4.
After Behrend failed to score in the bottom half of the seventh, the game proceeded into extra innings.
With one out in the home half of the ninth, Gruber hit a solo home run to give her team a walkoff win and secure the AMCC championship for Behrend.
