Lady Lions Earn Wins Over D'Youville and Hilbert
10/13/2012 — ALTOONA, Pa. - Penn State Altoona women's volleyball picked up a pair of important Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference wins on Saturday, defeating D'Youville College and Hilbert College by scores of 3-1 in the Adler Gym.
The Lady Lions hosted a day of AMCC women's volleyball, playing in the first and last matches. In the two middle matches, Pitt-Greensburg defeated D'Youville 3-0 and Hilbert topped Pitt-Greensburg 3-1.
Penn State Altoona won its first match of the day over D'Youville, taking the first, second, and fourth sets by scores of 25-12, 25-17, and 25-20. The Lady Spartans won the third set 25-22.
Mariah McDowell (Morrisdale, PA/West Branch) led the Lady Lions with 15 kills and 12 digs.
Moira Corrigan (Havertown, PA/Haverford) added 13 kills for Penn State Altoona, and teammate Amanda Hammer (Greencastle, PA/Greencastle-Antrim) contributed 10 kills.
Marina Cotarelo (North Salem, NY/North Salem) posted 41 set assists and added nine digs.
Emily Frye (Etters, PA/Red Land) tied for tops on the team with 12 digs in the opening match of the day.
Later in the day, the Lady Lions topped Hilbert in four sets. The hosts again won sets one, two, and four by scores of 25-22, 25-23, and 25-18. Hilbert took the third set 25-17.
In this match, Hammer led Penn State Altoona in kills with 10. She also posted a team-high three serving aces and added nine digs.
McDowell had nine kills and team-bests with 17 digs and four solo blocks.
Jessica O'Donnell (Langhorne, PA/Neshaminy) had eight kills, two solo blocks, and one block assist.
Cotarelo put up 32 set assists to go along with 10 digs, and Frye posted 12 digs for the second match in a row.
The wins put the Lady Lions on a three-game winning streak, with each of those victories coming against AMCC opponents.
